Think about an effective leader in your life. What kind of characteristics do they have? I am sure that if I collected responses from all of you, there would be many different words to describe the people in your lives that lead with purpose. This goes to show that there are many different ways to be a competent leader. There is not a specific blueprint, because leading others requires consistent adaptation and self-reflection.
This is the beauty of coaching. There are hundreds of philosophies that coaches have used for decades to get the most out of their athletes. However, there are a few traits that aspiring leaders should pursue if they wish to positively impact those in their care.
In his book, "The 3 Pillars of Elite Results" author Todd Cetnar says that "if anyone is counting on you for anything, you are a leader." You do not need to coach, teach, or be a business owner to influence others.
Leadership is a skillset, and these skills include:
Connection
- Connection with those you lead
Consistency
- Maintaining consistency in habits, personality, and decisions
Character
- Not only speaking about, but demonstrating strong character
Communication
- Clearly communicating direction, ideas, and vision
Competence
- Ability and knowledge in a subject to perform necessary tasks and to educate others
Courage
- Boldness to do what is right even if it's difficult
This week, I encourage you to find ways sharpen these six skills.
May we all work to be consistent in the way we interact with others. This will help people trust us, as they will know what to expect regardless of circumstances.
Have courage to stand up for what you value. What is important to you within your organization? Hold those in your charge to high expectations, and model these expectations in your own life (character).
As we have discussed before, and will most certainly discuss again, leadership is a great responsibility. It should not be taken lightly. Those considering going into leadership should be prepared to personally connect, maintain consistency, live with character, communicate directly, learn and grow to become competent, and be courageous when faced with demanding circumstances.
I know that this group is up to the task. You would not be reading these words if you were not committed to significantly impacting people's lives for the better. Keep seeking out ways to best serve those around you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this week's newsletter. As mentioned before, I would love for this to be an interactive experience for each of us. Please share any comments, questions, or feedback that you may have. Also, if you know of anyone that would benefit from these emails, please send them this link to sign up.
