Serve, Coach, Lead Newsletter #5: Family

This week I will offer a few thoughts on the word family.

With Christmas coming up this week, I encourage you to make the most of the time you get to spend with those close to you. The lives we lead are not defined by possessions, wealth, or status. When it is all over, the only thing that will matter is the relationships that we share with others.

The importance of this concept is demonstrated in the idea that we as leaders spend our days "selling tickets to our funeral." While our lives are not a competition to get the most people to show up to our celebration of life, it is a reminder that each day we can either have a positive or negative influence on those around us. The impact that we have on others will be represented in the people gathered together to honor our life once our time on Earth has come to an end.

People will hardly remember what we say, and will even find it difficult to remember what we do, but will always remember how we made them feel.

This Christmas, let's find ways to make the people around us feel important. Spend quality time with those we may only see once a year. Be present with those we are with. Let's make a concerted effort to reconnect and spend time with people whose relationships we value.

Finally, as leaders, we should make sure to reach out to those in our organizations. Everyone has different family dynamics, and a simple "Merry Christmas" from us next Sunday could make all the difference. Show your players/students/employees that you are thinking about them through a brief text or email. This is a very simple way to continue to connect with your people and to strengthen your relationship with them.

They will always remember how you make them feel!
