Everyone faces adversity. Randomly select any program, organization, or group of people with a common goal, and they will most likely be able to pick out at least one circumstance that they have had to overcome in order to reach their goals.

The teams that persevere and get past these difficult situations usually find a way to take on the mentality that "it doesn't matter."

What doesn't matter?

Does winning not matter? Does working hard and striving for excellence not matter?

The answer to both of these questions is NO.

What truly doesn't matter are any unforeseen events that could impact a group. Insignificant circumstances that are not within the control of the team ultimately don't matter.

What are some situations that are out of a team's control?

- The officials

- The opponent

- The playing conditions

- The best player is injured

These factors sometimes make it hard to be successful. However, our indifference should not be to the outcome. Our indifference is to the obstacles that we are going to face.

Having an "it doesn't matter" mentality allows a group to focus on the main things that will help them be successful. The ability to concentrate on the task at hand (rather than outside distractions) is the mark of a good team.

As you head into this week, don't allow circumstances outside of your control have an effect on your focus. Encourage those around you to prioritize what is important, and have an "it doesn't matter" mentality with everything else.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this week's newsletter. As mentioned before, I would love for this to be an interactive experience for each of us.
