Have you ever gotten a new job, promotion, or moved into a new environment? I'm sure that many of us have. It is not always easy, especially if you are taking over an organization. When transitioning into any new role, there are many aspects to consider. In Jack Leggett's book, "The ABC's of Excellence" he describes the four C's to expect when moving into a new position.

The first is Conflict.

When we become leaders within new organizations, we inherit the habits and systems of returning members. While there is often much to be learned from those that have been in the program, you will inevitably be working to overcome the notion that "this is how it has always been done." Prepare to be faced with the challenge of changing certain group norms.

The second is Change.

After working through the conflict stage, positive change can occur. Some aspects that might change are the attitudes, culture, direction, and work habits of the people within the organization. As this change happens the members of your team will begin to enjoy being together. As the group takes on a new perspective, they will begin to trust you and your philosophy. Through this, the culture will start to take shape, and players will begin to buy into the program.

The third is Commitment.

The three main components of getting commitment from your players/employees/students:

Create an environment where:

1. They are going to be challenged and held accountable

2. Where they can have fun

3. Where they feel like they belong and feel valued

If we can create this kind of environment, our people will have our backs, because they know that we have theirs.

Players will speak highly of their experience within our programs, and will have a sense of pride because they are a part of something special.

This creates internal leadership because players take on the responsibility of holding themselves and their teammates to a high standard.

The fourth C is Championships.

Now, this is not a guarantee that a championship will come to your program if you go through the stages above. However, success for every organization can look different depending on the situation. The ultimate achievement that a group of people can attain is the confidence and pride that no one has outworked them. Having players that represent the program well in the classroom, on the road, and in the community is another way of measuring success. As many great coaches can attest to, winning is a byproduct of doing everything to the best of your ability. This takes persistence and self-discipline, but as leaders we have the opportunity to instill these values into those we influence.

Many of you reading this have probably already gone through these stages of moving into a new position. My hope is that we can remember that each new situation comes with challenges, but our ability to work through difficult times and make a positive impact on those around us will ultimately determine our success.
